Prime Knitting Time is Approaching Fast!

With the shorter days and cooler weather approaching, many of us turn to indoor activities like knitting to keep us sane. Or mostly sane.

We’re in the planning stage for fall knitting classes here at Faking Sanity right now. Classes will be offered based on interest, but at this time, we’re considering Beginner Knitting, Advanced Beginngers, Knitting Socks on Two Circular Needles, and Beginner Lace Scarves/Shawls.

We can also arrange one on one private knitting lessons on a wide variety of knitting skills, so give us a call at 250-782-8811 for more information or to state your interest. See you soon, and happy knitting!

Mmmmmmmmmmm….. Muffins!

What’s not to like about a muffin? From the most basic to the most elaborate, they’re tasty, often nutritious, perfect for eating on the go, and are great whether you’re looking for breakfast or just a quick snack.

We’ve been having fun for the past week or so testing out new recipes for mini-loaves and muffins here at Faking Sanity. Today’s was a carrot muffin based on our famous carrot cake recipe; if you love our carrot cake, come try one of these! We’ve also had Cranberry Apple, Cornbread, Honey Apple Chai, East Coast Pumpkin, Chocolate Zucchini and Empire State muffins (filled with carrots, apples, cranberries and walnutty goodness). My personal favourites have been the Hazelnut Mocha muffins; they taste just like Ferrero Rochers, but are way healthier! Mmm. Muffins.

Local Artist Showcased at Faking Sanity

What is encaustic art? It is an ancient art form involving painting with a special concoction of beeswax and pigment. The specialized wax formula is melted onto a tiny iron or stylus and applied to the paper. The process is a challenge due to the speed at which the wax sets, but the result is spectacular: a one of a kind textured piece that seems to emanate light. The medium is beautifully interpreted by local artist Alice Langlois. Make your way over to Faking Sanity this month to see these for yourself; you’re in for a real treat!

Alice also has several other pieces on display, and I think mind-blowing is probably the best word I can think of to describe them. From a beautiful seascape to a unique concept portrait, there’s a little bit of everything. Her paintings are so realistic most people assume they’re photographs until they step right up to them.

All of the pieces on display are also for sale – at great prices – and would make great Christmas gifts or decorations for your home, all while supporting a local artist. Come check them out over the next couple of months.

Organic Coffee is Kick Ass and Three Sisters and…

My favourite coffee for the past several years has been Kicking Horse’s Three Sisters, so it was a no-brainer for us to use Kicking Horse coffees here at Faking Sanity.

Kicking Horse is a BC company, and we’ve always felt it important to buy locally whenever we can. Did you know, though, that all Kicking Horse coffees are certified organic and fair trade? Yes, that’s right. Whether it’s the mellow Three Sisters, the Kick Ass-iest dark roast, or the basic Decaf, it’s all shade-grown organic and fair trade coffee. The Decaf is also processed with the 100% Swiss Water method, rather than the more common chemical method. Even their take out containers are eco-friendly – they’re all recyclable, and compostable too!

Don’t Judge a Book By It’s Cover… maybe!

Have you ever been drawn to a book because of a catchy title or the look of the cover? I have. And many times, it’s led me to discover great new authors, like AJ Jacobs. So, here are a few covers and titles that caught my eye recently at the store. What do you think?

I’m already half way through the AJ Jacobs (A Year of Living Biblically), and I’m loving it so far. We also just got in his previous book (Know It All), where he chronicles his journey reading through the entire Encyclopedia Britannica in a year. If it’s anything like this one, I may have to pull it off the shelf and read it myself before anyone else buys it!

What about you guys? Any great finds that you first read just because they caught your eye?

Back(Pack) to School Drive

It may feel like summer has just (finally!) begun, but September is right around the corner and kids will be going back to school pretty soon! Sadly, there are hundreds of kids in the school district that don’t have the money to buy even the most basic school supplies, so we’re supporting the South Peace Community Resources Society’s Back(Pack) to School campaign.  Their goal is to be able to present a backpack filled with new school supplies and gift certificates to every child in need, and you can help by dropping your donations in the bin in our lobby over the next few weeks.
