Shop Photos, Facebook and Twitter

You’ve asked for them, and I finally have them – shop photos! It’s tough to get shop photos that don’t have people in them when you’re trying to run a shop, so I took these while we were closed. It takes me a while, but occasionally, I have a good idea! There are a few shots of the layout, and a few of a yummy mint latte with chocolate sprinkles.

Also, we’ll be starting to post our daily specials, as well as new stock shipments and events on both our Twitter and Facebook pages. Come check them out.

1 month in business!

I can’t believe it’s been a month already. I actually managed to get a few pictures of the store this week, and just realized that I left my camera at the store, so no pictures tonight, but I should be free to post again on Saturday evening, so expect a few then.

As for the business itself, things are going well. In a small town, everything is word of mouth, and people seem to be starting to hear about the book side of the business now. We’re getting in new books nearly every day, and shelving them as quickly as we can inventory them. We’ve already added two additional bookshelves since we opened just over 4 weeks ago. We’re also trying out new recipes, getting in new teas, flavoured honeysticks, and even tea presses for sale, at your request. Of course, the Yoga Blend tea has been so popular that it’s already sold out, but we’ll be getting in more in the next week or two.

Thanks to everyone who has helped us feel welcome and helped make our first month a success!

Faking Sanity Knit Night aka Stitch ‘n B*tch

Are you a knitter or crocheter in the Dawson Creek area? We’ll be starting to host a weekly knit night at the store. It will be a very casual; bring your yarn and hooks or sticks, and join us for a bit of knitting, crocheting and conversation. Come join us starting this Thursday night – drop in any time between 6:00 and 8:00 pm. See you there!

Mmmmm… chai!

I’ve loved chai since the first time I tried the spicy tea in Calgary. When we decided to buy the business in Dawson, and open up Faking Sanity, it was a no-brainer that we would serve not only standard coffees and lattes, but also chai lattes and chai spritzers.

This week, I decided to experiment with liquid chai extract as a baking ingredient. Have you ever had a chai muffin? It is FABULOUS! I made them Saturday at about 1 o’clock and we had 2 left by the time we closed! Well, I have to admit I sampled a couple myself… I’m hoping to try more new recipes in the coming weeks, too. Definitely more baking with chai, maybe a cranberry-lemon square or a few other goodies. We’ll see.

Open again!

All issues resolved! We now have a working kitchen sink again, and all is well with the world. And while the plumber was working, we used the time to double our Sci-Fi & Fantasy section. Come check it out!

Plumbing Emergency

For those of you who found the shop because of the blog, we thought we should post here tonight. Due to a plumbing emergency, the shop will be closed temporarily. We’re hoping to re-open tomorrow afternoon if possible. Check back here, or on our Facebook page, or call the store at 782-8811 if you want to know for sure before heading down. Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience.

Week 1

Well, it’s been a quiet week here on the blog, but it’s been anything but over at the shop. The cafe has been so busy that neither perian nor I have been able to add more than a dozen or so books to our inventory this week (despite the thousands of books in the back waiting to be entered), and we’ve gratefully accepted the help of several awesome friends and family members who’ve bused tables,  done dishes – you name it – through our busiest periods. We’re hoping to find a more permanent solution soon, but we’re extremely grateful to all of you who have helped us get where we are today!

Unfortunately, opening day was busy and neither of us got pictures ourselves, but we’re hoping to get a few to show you all soon. As for our first week, I’d say it was a great success. We reorganized a few things after our first day to make things more efficient, and tweaked our processes a bit as we learned what worked best. Today was our first slow day all week, but it was a chance to plan next week’s menu and ordering, which was also quite necessary. We also got to chat with a fellow knitter from a M1 knitting retreat a few years ago!

This first week has been odd in so many ways. It’s been much busier than I anticipated, given our soft launch, with no advertising whatsoever. And considering that when we started talking about this business, it was a bookstore/coffee shop, it seems weird that I’ve barely stepped out of the kitchen all week. That being said, it’s been great; we’ve seen and met lots of great people, and we’ve gotten so many compliments.

We’ve already picked up a couple more bookshelves so we can add more stock out on the floor, and have placed an order for another dozen or so flavours of loose leaf teas, which seem to be a hit so far. We’re truly excited about the opportunity ahead of us. And on that note, I’m off to the exciting land of nod. Goodnight folks! More news soon, I promise.
